Santander is urging holidaymakers to take full advantage of their credit cards to make their money go even further.
Research by Santander Cards has shown that £4.92 billion was saved last year by people booking their travel and accommodation independently, avoiding tour operators and travel agents .
Emma Roberts, director of Santander Cards, said that it was a sign that Britons are becoming savvier when it comes to travelling, and she believes they can take it a step further by using the company's credit cards while abroad.
She said: "The Santander Zero Credit Card is one of the only cards on the market to offer fee-free foreign usage anywhere in the world, helping travellers to cut out unnecessary costs when going abroad this year and making their money go further."
The company recently reported that, in 2009, British people paid out £122 million in foreign exchange fees when using their credit cards abroad because of 2.75 per cent charges often imposed on them.
