Contactless credit card usage could become even more widespread with the announcement that maximum limits are being increased by one provider.
Barclays has said that its limit will now go up from £10 to £15 for the four million Barclaycard credit cards that have contactless technology built in.
Brian Cunnington, head of debit cards for Barclays, said the popularity of contactless cards is increasing and hopes the new change will encourage more retailers to allow for its use.
He added: "It is the right time for the industry limit to increase to £15, in line with demand from consumers and retailers alike.
"The new higher limit gives customers the flexibility of paying for even more transactions quickly, securely and conveniently."
A retailer that offers contactless payment is Café Nero, which rolled out the technology to its 380 stores last year.
Pret A Manger has also adopted it as it can help to speed up transactions during busy periods for the high street food chain.
