Credit card companies are trying to come up with ways of charging customers whether they are using the plastic or not, according to one expert.
Writing for the Mirror, financial journalist Simon Read cited recent dormancy charges which have begun to appear in the terms and conditions for certain companies' credit cards .
Abbey recently announced those who do not use their credit card for six months will be charged £10, while American Express customers can also expect an annual fee of £20 for neglecting plastic for a year.
Mr Read said that some people may still want to keep the cards to help with unexpected bills.
"If you want to keep the card as back-up for emergencies then use it occasionally to avoid the dormancy fee, making sure you pay off the debt as soon as the bill arrives to avoid having to pay interest charges," he advised.
uSwitch.com recently warned that Brits could incur a collective £150 million in late credit card payment charges thanks to the postal strike.
