Consumers have been warned that they should remain vigilant to the threat of ID fraud given the continuing dispute between the Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
According to CreditExpert, there is a temptation to blame the delay of mailed financial documents on the postal strike when the reason behind the absence could be far more sinister.
Darryl Bowman from CreditExpert said particular attention should be paid to the late delivery of credit card bills, as fraudsters could have used the strike as cover for taking over the account.
"The recent upsurge in account takeover fraud shows that we mustn't let the postal strike act as a smokescreen for fraudsters," he commented.
"It's tempting to assume missing post is down to a backlog. Investigate and report any missing items quickly."
Fraudsters can also obtain personal details and documents by diverting mail, which provides further motivation for consumers to make enquiries if their mail is failing to come through.
Last Thursday (October 29th), CIFAS, the UK's Fraud Prevention Service, noted an 11 per cent increase in fraudulent activity.
