Up to 217,000 people in the UK have a credit card which they keep secret from their partner, according to high street bank Halifax .
Secretive credit card holders use the cards to purchase items they do not want their partners to know about, hide existing debt from them or simply for emergencies and on average they are used for purchases of less than £500.
However, while the number of people who do keep secret credit cards may seem large, this represents only one per cent of cardholders with a partner and the bank said that the vast majority of us are honest with our spouses.
Adrian Bryant, head of marketing for Halifax Credit Cards, said: "It's important that people are honest about their finances with their partner as it may affect their ability to secure products in joint names."
Recent research by financial advice website MoneyExpert.com revealed that credit card rates are at their highest since the beginning of the credit crunch .
