The government could be set to ban credit card cheques, it has been revealed.
Labour MP Russell Brown has included measures for ending the use of credit card cheques in his lending (regulation) bill and it could gain backing from the government, reports the Press and Journal.
Mr Brown, who represents Dumfries and Galloway, is also looking to stop credit card providers from automatically increasing credit limits .
The moves seem to have garnered some sympathy from the government.
Speaking to the news paper, business minister Gareth Thomas, stated that there are a range of concerns about credit card cheques.
"They are usually sent to consumers unrequested, tempting people into spending that they may not be able to afford," he said.
Often credit card cheques are used for essential expenditure, rather than for purchasing luxury items, Mr Thomas added.
For this reason, the government welcomes credit card restrictions included in the bill and would be happy to see it progress, he stated.
Last week, David Thompson, a Scottish National Party MSP, called for the government to introduce caps on credit card rates .
