The recession did not dampen the Valentines Day spirit with people still splashing out on debit and credit cards, figures show.
Data released by Barclaycard Payment Acceptance revealed that the debit and credit card spending on flowers on February 14th was up by 168.8 per cent on the week before.
It also revealed that jewellery purchases increased by 67 per cent in the week leading up to the special day, while restaurants also saw an increase in debit and credit card payments.
Stewart Roberts, business development director at Barclaycard said: "People are still keen to splash out on their loved ones on Valentine's Day, with large week on week increases for jewellers and florists in the run up to the day."
However, spending was down year on year, he added as people look to tighten their belts when it comes to debit and credit card spending, he added.
Recently, Nationwide Building Society was named most responsible credit card lender at the Card Awards.
