New research has revealed that credit card users are facing a 12 per cent increase in cases of identity fraud .
Conducted by CreditExpert through the fraud prevention database National Hunter, the findings show that more criminals are taking advantage of those with credit card accounts.
The first quarter of the year saw 11.91 cases of credit card identity fraud in the UK per 10,000 applications and this increased by 6.8 per cent to 12.72 in the following three-month period.
This rose again to 13.37 cases per 10,000 credit card applications in the third quarter of 2009, according to the research.
Darryl Bowman, spokesperson for CreditExpert, said: "The surge in cases of identity fraud is very worrying. As we get wiser to protecting ourselves from fraud, it's clear that criminals are working even harder to steal our personal details so they can apply for credit ."
Financial Fraud Action UK recently reported that credit card customers are still being duped by a well-worn scam which encourages people to give their confidential account details over the phone.
