Credit cards which allow providers to donate sums of money to charitable organisations have been praised by MBNA .
The credit card company conducted research which found that only six per cent of people own charity plastic, despite the fact that no money is taken off the customer when donations are made.
Only 27 per cent realised that there are no extra charges on charity credit cards and MBNA is now calling for more information to be given out to raise awareness of the "significant" difference they make.
John Greaves, spokesperson for MBNA, said: "The results show givers see the value of a charity credit card, but that many are unclear of how they work in practice."
The items have already raised over £10 million for the World Wildlife Fund, more than £1.4 million for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and offered £1.5 million to the National Trust .
Consumers hoping to put their holiday spending on a charity credit card could find one with a zero per cent purchase period to avoid lingering debts in the New Year, the Independent recently reported.
