The number of cases of credit card fraud increases over the Christmas period and consumers are being warned to take extra care with their plastic.
Sarah Blaney, card fraud expert at CPP, said that 31 per cent of those who lose their credit card or have it stolen become the victim of identity theft, although steps can be followed to reduce the risk of the crime.
Ms Blaney advised consumers to only take out the cards they will be using for their Christmas shopping in order to reduce the impact if a wallet or purse does get taken.
She added that shoppers should not just slip credit cards back into their pocket after making a purchase, as it is much easier to steal a single card than a full wallet.
"The biggest piece of advice to give is, when you finish your Christmas shopping, check all of your receipts against your bank statements, so you can make sure that there are no fraudulent transactions that have occurred," the expert concluded.
The first ten months of 2009 saw 68,000 cases of credit card identity theft, according to recent research by CIFAS, the UK's fraud prevention service - 37 per cent more than in 2008.
