People in one situation may require a different credit card to those in another, according to one expert, and they should account for this when choosing which provider to go with.
The Mirror said that while most credit card companies offer a product with zero per cent interest rate on balance transfers or purchases, the small details will make a difference depending on who is using the plastic.
Credit card newcomers will want the zero per cent period to last as long as possible but those out to impress will want a platinum or gold product, providing they have the money to back it up.
Those taking a platinum credit card can still save money, however: "There are even some good deals to be had on platinum cards currently, so you can actually get an impressive card without being left too much out of pocket!"
Recent research by Sainsbury's Finance showed that credit cards with cash back or reward schemes are becoming increasingly difficult to find, with an 11 percent reduction in number in the past year.
