Apacs, the UK payments association, has issued credit card and debit card users with a number of tips.
The association has highlighted that Brits spent £18.1 billion on their credit cards and debit cards last year and a total of 309 million transactions were completed.
To help protect people from card crime and to ensure Brits do not accrue unnecessary costs when using their cards, Apacs has provided the following advice.
It states travellers should shield their pin when using their card, make sure they have the 24-hour contact number for their credit card or debit card provider and ensure they have supplied their card provider with an up-to-date contact number.
Sandra Quinn, director of communications at the association, states: "As a nation we are all using our cards more frequently abroad so it pays to be aware of any extra costs that may be incurred for using them overseas, as well as taking steps to protect them from fraud."
Apacs has also produced the Using Your Plastic Overseas guide to help people who use their credit cards or debit cards when travelling .
Earlier this month, Apacs revealed that consumers were increasingly turning away from using cheques as a method of payment for retail goods.
The association found that the value of cheque spending had fallen by 7.5 per cent over the course of last year.
