Consumers who have taken out a number of credit cards can become confused and detached from the amount of money they are spending, one expert has warned.
James Ketchell, a spokesperson for the Consumer Credit Service, explained that the "liberalised" credit card market in the UK might lead some people to have a casual attitude to debt .
Mr Ketchell said: "[People] need to really be aware that the money they're using will have to be paid back at some point. It's very easy with credit cards because you're not seeing the money in real terms, so it becomes detached."
However, he did add that, in his opinion, people are now more aware that credit card debt has to be paid back than they were in the past.
According to a report by Datamonitor, the average Briton held 1.4 credit cards at the end of 2006, twice the number of any other country in Europe .
