The credit card market has seen Abbey launch a new offer on their credit card, 5 per cent cash back, when £1,000 is spent in any major UK supermarket .
The past year has seen a rise in the use of cash back credit cards . Many companies offer between 0.5 per cent and 1 per cent cash back on purchases. The new card will see Abbey customers receiving cash back when they use their card in major UK supermarkets.
The deal is not limited to new Abbey customers and is available until the end of January 2008. As well as earning 5 per cent on supermarket purchases for the first £1,000 spent, customers will also benefit from three months interest free credit on purchases and 12 months interest free on balance transfers . This offer is predicted to attract many new customers.
The average household will spend approx £200 a month on supermarket shopping, for those using the new card, will earn huge cash back amounts in for five months.
An industry official said, 'Almost all of us will be spending £1,000 at supermarkets between now and the end of January, so an extra £50 will come in very handy. Abbey says this is the first of many credit card offers, so I look forward to seeing what it comes up with for the start of February.
Another industry official said, 'If, as it has promised it will, Abbey consistently delivers deals that appeal to the mass market then the card could well build up a reputation as a good one to opt for if you're looking for cash back.'
