People looking to take out credit cards have been advised to make sure that the product they choose meets their requirements.
Martyn Saville, a spokesperson for Which?, said that it is "essential" that credit card holders take out deals that are suitable, suggesting that having a number of cards for different reasons can be "useful".
"For example, if you pay off the balance every month, you may be best to go for a cashback card ," she explained.
However, for people who have a substantial outstanding balance a zero-per cent on balance transfers offer may be the best option, she added.
Meanwhile, Mr Saville warned that store cards can be an "expensive" way to pay for purchases because providers tend to charge relatively high rates of interest.
The UK payments association Apacs recently reported that at the end of 2006 there were 74.4 million credit and charge cards in the country.
