Apacs, the UK payments association, has backed the House of Lords in its stance on section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, as it relates to credit cards .
Lords have confirmed that the section, which has always been unclear relating to the use of credit cards, will cover purchases made overseas, irrespective of the type of transaction used.
According to Apacs, the decision is one that has been in the pipeline for some time and will finally clear up the thorny issue of exactly how this act relates to the use of plastic such as credit cards outside of the UK.
Sandra Quinn, director of corporate communications at Apacs, said: "From a customer's point of view, this decision means no change as card companies had been meeting valid overseas claims anyway.
"Clearly the card industry will need to consider the implications of today's ruling for their individual businesses."
However, the company also warned consumers that this ruling is no substitute for a travel insurance policy when purchasing overseas. Moneysupermarket.com recently said that travel insurance is a must-have item for lost cash .
