Company bosses may find it makes business sense to offer customers the facilities to make a payment by debit or credit card in certain situations, it has been claimed.
Simon Bennett, spokesperson at UK payments association Apacs, has made the comments following the publication of a recent study into debit card penetration rates across the country.
According to Apacs' figures, 84 per cent of UK people currently own a debit card, while 70 per cent used the payment method to buy things at some point last year.
And outlining the business logic underpinning the decision to provide debit and credit card access, Mr Bennett indicated that some smaller firms may wish to re-think their strategy.
"It's a commercial decision that a business has to make," he explained.
"A large retailer like Tesco will obviously have hundreds and hundreds of card transactions going through every day, whereas a corner shop may have potentially one or two."
However, Mr Bennett acknowledged that some companies may be put off by the fact that they will have to pay a proportion of each credit card transaction to the provider of automated payment services.
