Shopaholics could save hundreds of pounds every year by cutting down their spending on life's little luxuries, it has been claimed, in news that may be of interest to people looking to clear their credit card debts.
According to research from financing website moneysupermarket.com, Britons spend approximately £15 every week on inessential purchases such as coffees, magazines, food snacks, cigarettes, chewing gum and soft drinks.
Adding these little savings up for a full 12 months means that credit card customers could save £800 per year, which they could potentially put towards their credit card repayments.
Put another way, it could be enough for a credit card customer to save £33,004 over their entire working life.
Stuart Glendinning, managing director at moneysupermarket.com, commented on the figures.
"Many people think nothing of making the odd purchase throughout the day for coffee, cigarettes or lunch, but restricting these to a bare minimum or cutting them out completely could see you £33,000 better off," he said.
Today is officially designated Ash Wednesday in the Christian calendar, which marks the official start of Lent.
It is traditional on this day to forgo one luxury until Easter Sunday, which this year falls on April 8th 2007.
