Credit card users are reaping the benefits of the new chip and pin payments system, it has been claimed.
Today marks the first anniversary of the official launch of chip and pin across the nation and UK payments association Apacs has commemorated the occasion by highlighting the penetration of the system.
According to its credit card figures, 138 of the 142 million payment cards in the UK now feature chip and pin technology.
Meanwhile, it is thought that every second of the day sees approximately 185 chip and pin transactions take place on debit and credit cards.
Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs, explained the implications for credit card users.
"Chip and pin cards now account for 97 per cent of all payment cards in circulation," she said.
"As a result, it is now safer than ever to use your card when shopping."
Apacs represents the interests of its 31 members across a broad range of banking issues concerning debit and credit cards.
According to the association, these members account for 97 per cent of all payment traffic in the UK.
