People should avoid store cards unless they are "very disciplined" about the way they use them, according to one expert.
Paul Davies, head of money research at consumer magazine Which?, said that generally people ought to "ignore" store cards due to their relatively high rates of interest .
Consumers using store cards can expect to pay an APR that is in the "high 20s", while there are far more competitive credit cards available on the market, Mr Davies claimed.
"It may be that you're tempted by a discount on goods or promotions or exclusive evenings provided by certain stores," he commented.
However, unless people are "very disciplined" about the way they spend using the cards, they are often "best to avoid", he added.
According to a study by uSwitch.com, consumers with store cards pay an average of 62 per cent more interest than those with credit cards.
