American Express has warned consumers that many credit card users could not be protected from fraudsters.
The company cited research conducted by MoneyExpert earlier this week, which found that 43 per cent of UK credit cards do not offer purchase protection.
Purchase protection offers cover for items bought on a credit card which are then stolen, lost, or damaged accidentally.
However, American Express noted that that its range of credit cards offers protection for up to 90 days, at £2,500 per item to an annual maximum of £20,000.
Additionally, the company's credit cards provide online fraud protection against any unauthorised purchases made over the internet.
Neil Munroe, a spokesperson for Equifax, recently warned that ID theft - often caused by credit card fraud - is a "growing problem" in the UK.
"Whether it's card transaction fraud or whether it is someone stealing your identity and applying for credit - it's all on the increase," he said.
The expert added that measures - such as keeping a close eye on a credit file - could help individuals to protect against fraud without purchasing additional insurance cover.
